Overview – Family Visa (EU/EEA & Swiss Nationals – Netherlands)

This visa is for family members of EU/EEA or Swiss nationals who wish to travel to or join their relative in the Netherlands. The application process follows a simplified procedure, with fewer required documents and no visa fee.

Important: This procedure does not apply to family members of Dutch nationals residing in the Netherlands, unless they have lived or worked in another EU/EEA country or Switzerland before moving to the Netherlands.

Who Qualifies as a Family Member?

  • Spouse, registered partner, or common-law partner
  • Children under 21 years old (including those of the spouse/partner)
  • Dependent parents or grandparents (including those of the spouse/partner)

To qualify for visa facilitation, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • You are a family member of an EU/EEA/Swiss national.
  • You are accompanying or joining your EU/EEA/Swiss family member.
  • Your family member is residing in or traveling to another EU/EEA country (not their home country).

If you lived in the UK with your Dutch family member before January 1, 2021, you may qualify under the Brexit withdrawal agreement, provided you:

  • Had an established family relationship before December 31, 2020, and can prove it with official documents.
  • Lived in the UK for at least 3 consecutive months with your Dutch family member before they moved.
  • Resided under EU law, meaning your Dutch family member was registered as an EU national in the UK.
  • Hold or previously held a UK residence permit as a family member of an EU national.

Visa-Free Travel:

If you have a valid residence permit from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, or Romania, you do not need a visa to enter the Netherlands.

Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before travel.
  • Standard processing time is 15 calendar days.
  • Some cases may take longer due to high application volume, additional verification, or nationality-based checks.
  • Airplane crew members do not need to leave their passports at the visa centre during processing.

Your passport will remain with the visa centre during processing. You can track your application status using the track & trace code provided at submission.
